Horses graze in the pasture to the south. Their riders talk about the threat to their pastoral life from the planned expansion of a trafficway. Under one plan, the expanded roadway would run directly through this property. The universal tensions arising between public and private uses of land are keenly felt in Kansas where public recreational space is limited. The state ranks exceptionally low in the United States in this regard. An artist wishing to document the landscape in paint, photography or other medium, is constantly reminded of this fact by the ubiquitous fences and no tresspassing signs. Tresspassers are often poachers and have left the landowners in a serious frame of mind which casual visitors are wise to respect.
