Title: Brook Creek Park Artist: Hughes, Langston Height: 0.000" Width: 0.000" Brook Creek Park, Oak Hill Ave. and East Thirteenth St., near former site of Woodland Park According to city maps, all of the area formerly known as Woodland Park has been combined with Brook Creek Park. The Brook Creek playground and picnic area are just southwest of the historic amusement park. From the Brook Creek Park sign, Oak Hill and Prairie Avenues converge at Twelfth St., by a paved circle and grassy area that were once a baseball diamond. This is the trailhead to the former Woodland Park. Further east was a stop for the streetcars. The electric company, Lawrence Light & Railway Co., owned the for-profit park, and streetcars provided service from Massachusetts Street (Knight). The widespread use of the automobile led to the decline of both streetcars and the park. Street cars ceased to run in 1933, when five bus routes replaced them. The Park Hetzel family owned the Woodland Park land for many years after Woodland Park days. |
