When Langston Hughes and his grandmother lived with Mary and James Reed, he attended New York School, two blocks from their home.
In 1909, he lived down the street with the Reed family, according to the city directory, and perhaps he attended this school briefly. According to Katie Armitage, he attended New York School in the fourth to sixth grades (1913-1914) and was remembered as a bright boy who sometimes spoke up in an independent manner.
Fred West, first African American principal in Lawrence, served here in 1896. By 1898, he was principal of Lincoln School.
This building, constructed in 1937, is not the original building, though it stands on the same site.
