Langston Hughes attended football games at this athletic field, near the location of the present stadium at Eleventh St. and Mississippi St. It was within walking distance of his grandmother’s house. Hughes wrote that he attended games on Saturdays and could hear the students yelling. The crowd’s roar is still audible throughout the campus area during football season. E.S. Tucker published this photograph in 1895.
