Central School, now the 901 Building (1893)

This office building is the former Central School, which Langston Hughes attended in seventh grade. The top story has been removed. After classes, Hughes walked east a few blocks to the library, possibly, and to Massachusetts St. and downtown area jobs.

Hughes attended this school 1914-1915 until his grandmother died. His mother was in Lawrence in the fall of 1915 to settle her mother’s affairs. She signed a bill of sale for 732 Alabama St. on Oct. 13, 1915. When Carrie and her second husband, Homer Clark, left for Illinois, Langston stayed on with Mary and James Reed, probably until the end of the fall semester. His mother and stepfather sent for Hughes to join them in Lincoln, where he continued school. No school records survive.
