Title: Warren St. Baptist Church Artist: Hughes, Langston Height: 0.000" Width: 0.000" Warren St. Baptist Church, now known as Ninth St. Baptist Church, 847 Ohio St., intersection of Ninth St. and Ohio (1872) The inset arch above the stained glass window gives the date of this building as 1872. Warren Street Baptist Church is where Langston Hughes’s grandparents and mother participated in some community services and cultural events, though they were not members. Now known as Ninth Street Baptist Church, the church continues to have an active congregation of about 250 people. According to the Pluralism Project, the church originated in 1855 as the Second Missionary Baptist Mission in Lawrence. First services were held in a hardware store, until a wooden building was erected on this site in 1868, soon replaced by this limestone building. The church is affiliated with the National Baptist Convention. |
