Title: Kansas (Barteldes) Seed Warehouse Artist: Hughes, Langston Height: 0.000" Width: 0.000" Kansas (Barteldes) Seed House, 803 New Hampshire St. (1864-1890s) Langston Hughes probably took his seeds to this warehouse rather than the retail store at 804 Massachusetts St. The three-story building, 120 feet by 120 feet, was renovated and now includes office and retail space. The plaque at the entrance reads: Typical utilitarian stone warehouse constructed between 1864-1890s in three stages. Barteldes Seed Company, founded ca. 1860, cleaned, stored, packaged, and shipped its internationally marketed products from this location until 1962.The founder, F. Barteldes, died in 1887, but his heirs kept the company going. Another seed store during the time of Hughes was the W.J. Busch Seed Co. at 608 Massachusetts. It also could be the seed company Hughes knew. |
