A plaque next to the entrance of the city hall has this quote from Langston Hughes’s poem “Youth”:

In 1978 the city had a contest among school children to select a motto or quotation for the new city building. This selection by Srija Srinivasan, who was ten at the time, won the contest. It refers to the city seal, which has a phoenix rising from ashes. During the struggle against slavery, fire destroyed the town twice—in 1856 and 1863
